At 8068meters (26,470 feet) Gasherbrum I (a.k.a. “Hidden Peak”) is the eleventh highest peak and is one
of only fourteen 8000-meter mountains.
The first ascent of any of the fourteen was made by a French party in 1950.
On July fifth, 1958, Andy Kauffman and Pete Schoening became the first humans to reach the summit of Gasherbrum I. Other members of the expedition were: Nick Clinch, Dick Irvin, Gil Roberts, Tom McCormack, Tom Nevison, and Bob Swift) At 8068 meters (26,470 feet) Gasherbrum I ranks number eleven among the fourteen 8000 meter mountains on our planet. Although all of these giants have now been climbed many times by people from various different countries and by various routes, only Gasherbrum I (also known as Hidden Peak) was first climbed by Americans.
A comprehensive, illustrated account of the expedition is given in A Walk in the Sky (ISBN 0-89886-042-3) Nick Clinch..
